My Paris Edit: Full Luxe, Full Drama

Where I stayed, ate, shopped, and sipped my way through this luxurious city of light.

Paris is synonymous with luxury — not just in gilded palaces and couture houses, but in the everyday moments that feel impossibly elevated. When I first came here as a broke college kid, I lived off bakery sandwiches, cheap white wine, and free views. And honestly? It was still magical.

On my triumphant return (as an adult with an income), I went all in. This time I leaned into the city’s flair for the dramatic — the grand hotels, the candlelit dinners, the over-the-top nights out.

Here are the places where I let myself experience it in full.

Where to Stay: Hôtel Dame Des Arts

This Left Bank gem feels equal parts boutique and cinematic. I had a balcony with a postcard view of the Eiffel Tower, and every morning I sat there being the most basic kind of tourist — espresso in hand, staring at the skyline as if it were my first time seeing it. The hotel décor is chic without trying too hard, and the rooftop bar is one of the best perches in the city.

Dinner at Le Comptoir Boutary

For me, this casual spot really nails modern French dining. The focus is on caviar, and they put it on everything. I didn’t expect to love it, but I couldn’t get enough. Caviar on potatoes, caviar on eggs, caviar on dishes I didn’t know could handle caviar. Each bite felt like a tiny revelation, reminding me why Paris is the epicenter of gastronomy: indulgent, surprising, and never dull.

A Moulin Rouge Night

Speaking of being the most basic kind of tourist, I saw the Féerie Revue show at the Moulin Rouge — a flurry of feathers and sequins that’s as over-the-top as it gets. A few of the musical numbers were corny, but the French Cancan was every bit as joyful and high-kicking as I hoped. What really amazed me, though, were the acrobatics. At one point, a man balanced upside down on his head, on a bottle, on top of a board held up by another man’s feet.

Dinner Cruise on the Seine: Le Calife

There are dozens of riverboats in Paris, but Le Calife is in a league of its own. It’s intimate, elegant, with food that genuinely holds its own against the view. The cruise timing is perfect: you drift through the heart of the city, and just as dessert lands on your table, the boat pulls up beside the Eiffel Tower as the light show begins.

Shopping the Marais: My Favorites

As a college kid, I came to the Marais for the clubs and bars. This time, we spent an afternoon wandering from shop to shop searching for things I could never find anywhere else. A few places I loved:

  • Empreintes is a concept store spotlighting French craftsmanship and design. I bought a few pieces of handcrafted art here. My favorite is a delicate, framed, ephemeral assemblage made from robin eggshells, painted in the most luminous shade of blue.

  • Monsieur Jewelry – Sleek, architectural chains and bracelets pieces that feel distinctly Parisian. I got a medallion with engraved eye surrounded by rays of light. It was giving The Da Vinci Code.

  • Pierre Hermé – Macarons taken to haute-couture levels (yes, they’re $$$, but even just one is worth it).

  • Poilâne – Ina Garten’s favorite bakery, so I had to stop in. The round sourdough loaves are legendary. I snagged some chocolate biscuits that were delightful.

  • Merci – A design and lifestyle store that feels like a cultural hub, perfect for gifts and inspiration. I found a cream and green knit polo I love, but also feel like I can only wear in Europe.

  • WHITEbIRD – A jewelry shop where every piece feels like an heirloom. This one was mostly a browsing experience for me.

Dinner at Le Clarence

Housed in an 18th-century mansion, Le Clarence is fine dining turned theater. From the moment you walk in, you feel Gilded Age rich — the chandeliers, the gilt, the hushed reverence of the space. Every part of the meal had a story, even the butter for the bread. The experience included nearly three hours of tasting. By the time the final course arrived, I was so full I thought I couldn’t possibly eat another bite, but then the chef himself came out with something new he was trying, and noted we’d be the first to taste it. So naturally, I found room. It was definitely one of the most memorable meals of my life.

Nightcap at the Hemingway Bar

Inside the Ritz, the Hemingway Bar is legendary, and it lived up to the hype. We met two close friends there, sank into the leather chairs, and laughed our way through some of the best cocktails I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is dark, glamorous, and timeless. I was glad to share the evening with people who made it feel like home.

Why These Places Matter

When I first came as a student, Paris was baguettes on park benches and sneaking into free museum days. On this return, it was balconies, champagne, and dinners that felt like theater. Both versions were unforgettable, but this time I could finally give in to the full drama of the city — and that, I think, is the real magic of Paris.
